Tavis is a geographer, with an interest in marine policy and political science. His research interests fall into the areas of international marine governance, development of environmental policy instruments such as marine planning, market approaches and indicators, and 'green' innovation and regional economic development. He is interested in policy implementation across integrated scales and the complexities that face communities, institutions and social systems facing change in marine social ecological systems.
Regionally, Tavis is focused on the UK, Europe and the North East Atlantic but has broad field experience in oceans governance ranging from the Polar Regions to SE Asia.
Tavis also works in developing and applying social science methods to policy problems and the improving the links between the natural and social sciences to improve science and policy dialogue and integration.
Within the Scottish Marine Institute Tavis contributes to the 'People and the Sea' research theme, is the coordinator of the Centre for Sustainable Coasts (CSC), and a member of the Ecology Department and of the lecturing team.
