Steve manages and oversees the ICT, data management and library functions at the Scottish Marine Institute.
The Information & Communications Technology (ICT) department is responsible for:
Sourcing, configuring, maintaining and securing all server hardware and systems to provide network and other services to SAMS staff and students (e.g. servers, virtual environments, switches and network storage).
Providing network services such as Active Directory, Email services, network file storage, VPN and wireless
Software licensing, installation, training and support
Desktop support
Purchasing advice for PCs and notebooks
Telephone system (as part of the UHI system)
Video conferencing equipment
Printers
Data Management provides data services for contracts, projects and infrastructure and includes:
database design
application development
web-based data front ends
GIS & mapping services (ArcGIS)
data archiving
data standards (e.g. MEDIN, GEMINI, INSPIRE) support.
ensuring SAMS meets it’s NERC data archiving obligations
The library at SAMS is for the use of all researchers, students and learned society members. The collection ranges from undergraduate books to rare and old editions of early scientific publications. It is also responsible for providing and maintaining subscriptions to relevant scientific journals and publications.
