Description of expertise and work
I am a support scientist in the Department of Microbial and Molecular Biology at the Scottish Marine Institute working mainly on Oceans 2025 Theme 1.
I started working here in May 2009, where I began by processing water samples taken on the R.R.S James Clarke Ross 2008 Arctic Icechaser cruise. This involved full taxonomic phytoplankton and ciliate counts from lugols samples as well as analysis for bacterial and pico-plankton abundance using flow cytometry amongst other things.
I have also worked on the BioMara project using flow cytometry to count and measure comparative lipid abundance between cultures and growth techniques. More on our analytical capabilities....
In June 2010 I was lucky enough to go to the Arctic myself aboard the JCR for Icechaser ll doing routine water collection and processing as well as bacterial production using radioactive isotopes and phytoplankton cell isolation.
- I provide technical support and training on a FACS sort flow cytometer
- I am a user of brightfield and fluorescent microscopes and associated imaging software
