My main research focuses on coupled social-ecological systems in the marine environment and the interface between science and policy and I lead a number of major international initiatives in these fields. Though much of my current work is in social science, my original training was in Chemical Oceanography and I maintain an active interest in this area, extending it to integrated assessment of marine systems.
At the Scottish Marine Institute I am a member of the ...

Current research projects
- Knowledge-based Management of Europe’s Seas (KnowSeas) Laurence Mee, Coordinator: This is a four year, 31 partner, 15 country research project designed to examine how Europe’s seas can be managed using a systems approach. It is multidisciplinary and works closely with DG-Environment to provide improved scientific support to the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
- Enhancing the use of science in International Waters projects to improve project results: This project supports the UN Global Environmental Facility’s $2Bn International Waters Focal Area by providing improved science inputs to marine environmental management programmes. I am coordinating work on Large Marine Ecosystems and offshore waters with a particular emphasis on examining the effectiveness of adaptive management as a central paradigm.
- Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery: The Black Sea is one of the few places in the world where we can monitor recovery from catastrophic eutrophication. Work is progressing on the evaluation of data gathered during four research cruises to the Black Sea and the results are being modelled.
