Why the Scottish Marine Institute?
The Scottish Marine Institute is a unique place to study in the UK. Rather than in a campus university, our students study in a dynamic research laboratory of international standing and are taught by expert researchers from every area of marine science. Being embedded in a research culture gives our students unprecedented access to up-to-the-minute knowledge, to the latest research equipment, and provides them with opportunities to get involved in exciting research projects even during their undergraduate studies.
We only accept small numbers of students each year. Studying in small groups allows our courses to include more fieldwork, laboratory sessions and in-depth discussions than would be possible with a large number of students. It also means students receive much feedback and can become the best they can be.
The environment at the Scottish Marine Institute is very friendly and inclusive. Although there is no student union and Oban is only a small town, our students enjoy an active social life and many get involved with the adventurous outdoor lifestyle that is so popular at the west coast of Scotland. more...
The Sheina Marshall Building is a new dedicated teaching facility (opened in November 2010) that provides a spacious and modern learning space to our students. It includes four laboratories, three seminar rooms, two lecture rooms, two computing suites, a student library, a large student study room and a canteen with spectacular views of the Firth of Lorn. Within the UK this must be the loveliest facility in which to study marine science.
