Marine invasive species identification workshop
OCTOBER 4-5 2012
This two-day course introduces participants to a range of invasive marine species found in UK waters and the various options that exist for the management and control of these species. The course is led by Dr Liz Cook who has extensive experience in the field of marine invasives (link below).
This course is particularly relevant for people working in the marine environment including in environment agencies, consultancies, aquaculture industry, offshore renewables sector, ports and harbours authorities, undergraduate or post-graduate marine science and ecology students and any other interested parties.
Highly invasive species that are already in UK waters and those thought to be 'high risk' but not yet present receive particular attention. Participants are introduced to:
- Definition of ‘invasive’
- Economic, environmental and societal impacts
- Pathways of transmission
- Risk assessment for species and pathways
- Eradication and control methods
- Identification of invasive species
- Overview of existing policies for dealing with the new arrival of a marine invasive species.
The course includes presentations and practical hands-on experience in the field collection of specimens and the use of microscopes and taxonomic keys for species identification. It begins with lunch and registration at 12.30 on Thursday 4th October and will finish at 16.30 on Friday 5th October.
