MRes Ecosystem-Based Management of Marine Systems
This demanding and ambitious taught MRes programme in Ecosystem-Based Management of Marine Systems provides students with expertise in the ecological and physical sciences and essential quantitative skills needed to manage ecosystems sustainably. Thereby the course fulfills an international need for people trained to deliver integrated coastal zone management from the tropics to the polar regions. The course explores the interconnections between the physical environment, biodiversity and the impacts of human activity on these systems. This approach provides superior understanding of ecosystem goods and services and of how to protect and manage marine systems. Students enhance their graduate and professional skills to further careers in government agencies. the commercial marine sector or academic, to become the next generation of managers and marine scientists delivering integrated coastal zone management around the world.
This programme is jointly delivered by two of Scotland's main marine science institutes at the University of St Andrews and at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban. The first semester is taught in St Andrews, the second in Oban, while the research semester can be undertaken at either partner institution. Students thus become acquainted with two major marine science institutes during their studies and can make valuable connections with active and successful researchers.
The start date for this course is the beginning of the autumn term at St Andrews. Admission, registration and accreditation for this course is handled by the University of St Andrews.
