Summary of research interests

As a member of the physics and modelling groups, my research interests lie mostly in the methods of sub-gridscale parameterisations and the cascade of energy between scales in the ocean.

Project

The small scales that control the large scales: Retaining the important physics of narrow tidal straits in large scale ocean models of western Scotland.

Project description and objectives

...to apply an unstructured grid model to the ocean environment of western Scotland using finite element techniques with a variable grid spacing to allow the local retention of small scales in a large-scale model.

The Gulf of Corryvreckan and Great Race eddy field will provide a case study, using the detailed observations made through the GREAT RACE project to understand the dynamics of an intense tidal race and its associated small-scale mixing and eddy phenomena.
